George Bernard Noble was born in 1892 in Florida. A Rhodes scholar at the University of Washington, he received his degree from Oxford University in 1915. After serving in World War I in the U.S. Army, he taught at several universities before coming to Reed in 1922. He earned a doctorate from Columbia University in 1935 and undertook many political and governmental assignments while at Reed before moving to the U.S. State Department in 1946.
